
Sierra Leone has joined the world to celebrate Education Week with the theme ‘Changing Course Transforming Education”.
According to the Minister of Basic and Senior School Education Dr David Sengeh, the week will focus on enlightening pupils in various schools on the importance of education, and also outline government’s efforts in strengthening the education sector of the country.
He said the education week also referred to as Global Action Week is one of the major central summit for the education movement. As it provides agenda to tackle challenges limiting education in some parts of the world and, make targeted efforts to achieve change in the education sector through collaborative efforts of governments and partners.
The minister called on parents, pupils and school authorities to play their part by ensuring they focus their attention on their children’s academics.
Secretary General of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation UNESCO Dr Mohamed Kamanda, said government has been working collectively with UNESCO to strengthen the education sector, he therefore pledged UNESCO’s commitment in supporting education in the country.
The pupils were pleased to be part of the engagement, they said, most of them were still faced with challenges especially in science subjects requesting that teachers placed more premium while teaching the topics, an also made recommendations in other areas.
Director of National Civic Education and Development Kalilu Tutangay and other authorities encouraged the pupils to be respectful to each other as responsible citizens and contribute to nation building.
