Josephine Kamara emerges as the first female Director General of SLBC since its transition from SLBS

Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In a groundbreaking move on the eve of International Women’s Day, Josephine Fatima Kamara has secured the prestigious position of Director General at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), making her the second female to hold this influential role.

The appointment, confirmed by parliament, aligns seamlessly with the global celebration of International Women’s Day, recognizing the achievements and contributions of women across social, economic, cultural, and political spheres. Josephine Kamara gracefully accepted her accolade, drawing applause from attendees at this well-attended session.

Josephine’s remarkable journey into the media landscape, both within Sierra Leone and abroad, was commended by members of the Sierra Leonean parliament. Her appointment, coming twenty-four hours before World Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, adds a new chapter to SLBC’s history.

Taking the reins from, Gina Banda Thomas Chairman of the Board of Directors, and who held the distinction of being the first female appointed to the position, Director Josephine is fully aware of the challenges ahead.

During her parliamentary confirmation, Honourable Daniel Koroma of the All People’s Congress Party (APC) offered words of encouragement. He urged Josephine not to view her appointment as the ultimate achievement but to aspire for greater heights in her role at SLBC. “I can tell that she is made up for more and will undoubtedly deliver more at SLBC,” assured Hon. Koroma.

In the parliamentary debate, Honourable Tamba Johnny, APC representative for Kono District, emphasized the crucial role local languages played at SLBS, increasing listenership and viewership in the past. He encouraged Josephine to swiftly reintroduce local languages at SLBC and advocated for the renovation and improvement of SLBC’s infrastructure. Hon. Johnny expressed trust in Josephine’s leadership, particularly as a woman.

Honourable Veronica Kadie Sesay praised Josephine for her rich and exemplary work over the years, inspiring her to succeed at SLBC. Hon. Dixon Rogers, representing Pujehun District, urged Josephine to utilize SLBC’s resources effectively to deliver quality services to the nation.

Hon. N’pha Conteh of APC called on Director Kamara to explore means of securing more funds from national and foreign agencies to enhance SLBC’s competitiveness. He urged government entities to support SLBC financially and encouraged Josephine to expand SLBC’s coverage and network within the country.

Hon. Nene Lebbie emphasized the need for SLBC to operate at its full potential to address the needs of the people. Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh highlighted the deplorable condition of SLBC compared to other media houses and called for an investigation into its finances.

In a plea for SLBC’s autonomy, Hon. Tawa Conteh cautioned against executive interference using section 62. Hon. Mohammed Papa Bangura from Bombali District urged Josephine to depoliticize SLBC and improve the staff’s working conditions.

Hon. Joseph William Lamin of SLPP, representing Bo District, advised Josephine to prioritize creativity, and Hon. Saa Emerson Lamina called for a shift in the narrative. He implored Josephine to motivate and develop her staff with skills and knowledge, positioning SLBC as a dominant force in the media landscape. SEG/8/3/2024
